Rotterdam Foodhallen: Pignons

Rotterdam Foodhallen is the kind of place that makes you feel like the city is doing something right. A former tram depot turned into a food market, with a rotating cast of vendors, a lively bar area, and the specific buzzy atmosphere that only a large, warm, people-filled indoor space can produce. Pignons is one of the vendors that calls it home — and I spent a day photographing what they do there.

Pignons is a Rotterdam food concept with a clear identity and a loyal following. In the Foodhallen context, they’re part of a broader ecosystem — one of many vendors, but one with their own distinct style and offering. My job was to capture the food, the space, and the energy of the place in a way that would serve them for their website and marketing materials. Food photography in a market setting is genuinely different from a controlled studio shoot. You’re working with ambient light, with movement, with the reality of a busy service. I find it more interesting, actually — the imperfect, atmospheric quality of market light can do more for a food image than a perfectly positioned softbox.

If you haven’t been to Rotterdam Foodhallen, put it on the list. The building itself — an old tram shed on the Schiekade — has real character: high ceilings, exposed industrial detail, and the kind of warm amber light that makes everything look slightly delicious. For a photographer, it’s a dream. For a food business, it’s both an opportunity and a challenge: you’re in a market with visual competition on all sides, and your photography needs to cut through.

I work with restaurants, food concepts, and hospitality venues across Rotterdam to create images that represent their food and their space honestly and beautifully. Whether you’re in the Foodhallen, on the Witte de Withstraat, or somewhere entirely unexpected — I’m Rachel Ross, a Rotterdam-based HORECA, brand, and lifestyle photographer, and I’d love to hear from you.
