Creative Portraits: Rotterdam's Modern Headshots

The headshot is having a moment — and not before time. The stiff, white-background corporate portrait has given way to something more honest: portraits that actually look like the person, taken in a real environment, with real light. This is a series of creative portraits I made in Rotterdam for professionals who wanted something that worked as hard as they do — images that could go on a LinkedIn profile, a website, a press kit, or a pitch deck without looking like they came from a vending machine.

The subjects in this series are Rotterdam people — entrepreneurs, creatives, professionals operating in a city that rewards ambition and originality. The brief for each was essentially the same: look like yourself, just photographed well. That's a deceptively simple ask. It requires choosing the right environment, the right light, and the right approach — and then getting out of the way and letting the person be themselves.

What makes a headshot work in 2020 is authenticity. Clients, collaborators, and employers can tell the difference between a portrait that's been forced and one that happened naturally. The best results come from a relaxed session with enough time to move through a few options, adjust, and find the frames where something real is happening. Forty-five minutes to an hour is usually right. Location in Rotterdam or wherever makes sense for you.
