A great hair salon is more than what happens in the chair. It’s the atmosphere, the people, the ritual of it — the way a good cut makes you walk out feeling like a slightly better version of yourself. Blow Kappers in Rotterdam gets this completely, and when they called me in to do their brand photography, I wanted to make sure the images reflected exactly that.

There is a version of brand photography that looks like stock: stiff, over-lit, generic. And there is a version that actually looks like the place. Blow Kappers is a real Rotterdam hair salon with real character — and the photography needed to match. We shot the space, the work, the team, and the small details that make the place what it is. The light through the windows. The tools on the counter. The moment a stylist and a client are talking and laughing and the client has completely forgotten they’re in a salon.

I spent a day at Blow Kappers moving through the space, getting close to the work, staying out of the way of the actual salon happening around me. The result was a gallery of images they could use across their website, Instagram, and any press they do — high-quality, on-brand, and genuinely them. That last type of image, the candid human one, is almost always the one that performs best. People can feel when something is staged, and they can feel when it’s real.
