N + J Amsterdam Love Shoot

Amsterdam in summer is one of those things. The light at golden hour bouncing off the canals, the city still warm and lazy, people moving at half speed. N and J booked a love shoot in Amsterdam and I got to spend an evening in arguably the most photogenic city in the world with two people who were clearly very much in each other's corner.

A love shoot — or couples session — is exactly what it sounds like: a session entirely about you two, in a place that means something, doing things that feel natural. No props, no awkward staged kisses on command. Just the two of you, and me following along trying to stay invisible. N and J had never really done a photoshoot before, which is the case for most couples I work with. Within fifteen minutes, they had completely forgotten I was there — which is exactly the goal.

You could argue that Amsterdam was purpose-built for couples photography, and I would have a hard time disagreeing. The canal houses, the light, the bridges, the fact that you can walk two blocks in any direction and find something beautiful. We wandered through a few favourite spots — along the Prinsengracht, through quieter side streets, down to the water as the sun got low. We weren't rushing. The images reflect that.

I'm Rachel Ross, a Rotterdam-based lifestyle and wedding photographer. My style is documentary and warm — I follow, I observe, I wait for the real thing. I'm based in Rotterdam but regularly photograph love shoots and couples sessions in Amsterdam. Golden hour is my favourite time to shoot — sessions run 1–1.5 hours and you'll walk away with 40–70 edited images.
