The Rumah Rotterdam: Rum Avengers

If you know The Rumah, you know it's not a bar that does things halfway. When they threw a Rum Avengers event — a celebration of rum culture, craft cocktails, and the kind of convivial atmosphere that makes Rotterdam's bar scene worth talking about — they brought the energy and I brought the camera.

The Rumah opened in Rotterdam's city centre and quickly became one of the most respected cocktail bars in the Netherlands. The philosophy is simple: take the craft seriously, take care of your guests, and create a space where the drinking is the point — not the posturing. Rum nights at The Rumah are something particular. The bar's approach to rum has always been knowledgeable without being pretentious, and events like Rum Avengers bring together people who genuinely love the spirit and want to learn more while having an excellent time.

Bar events are my favourite things to photograph. The energy is different from a wedding or a family session — it's looser, faster, more unpredictable. Bartenders move with purpose. Guests lean in over cocktails. There are moments of concentration and moments of laughter in close proximity. I work quickly and quietly at events like this — available light where I can, fast lenses, moving through the room without disrupting the atmosphere.

I'm Rachel Ross, a Rotterdam-based HORECA and lifestyle photographer. I've been documenting the city's cocktail scene since 2018 and I genuinely love the community I get to work in. Rotterdam's bar world is tight-knit, collaborative, and deeply craft-focused — and I don't plan to stop covering it.
