Rotterdam Maternity Session

Maternity photography walks a fine line. On one extreme, it can become overly posed and idealised - something that exists for Instagram rather than for the family. On the other, it can miss the moment entirely. The best maternity sessions find the middle: honouring what's actually happening - the physical reality of pregnancy, the anticipation, the quiet moments of reflection - while creating images that will matter to a family for years.

Pregnancy is a strange in-between time. You're preparing for something enormous while living an ordinary life. You're changing physically in ways that feel profound and sometimes uncomfortable. You're experiencing anticipation, nervousness, excitement, and doubt - sometimes all in the same day. Most of these feelings don't make it into family photographs, which is exactly why intentional maternity sessions are valuable.

What I tried to create during this Rotterdam session was an environment where this family could be themselves without performing pregnancy as an aesthetic. I photographed the mother's hands on her belly in the natural way bodies inhabit themselves. I captured partners looking at each other with the particular focus that comes when you're about to become responsible for another person. The best images came from the in-between moments - when someone forgot the camera was there and simply existed. That's when you can see what pregnancy actually looks like.

I'm Rachel Ross, a Rotterdam-based photographer specialising in maternity, lifestyle, wedding, and HORECA photography across the Netherlands. I approach every session with a documentary mindset - interested in what's actually happening rather than what looks good in isolation.
